SMB ADOPTION OF TABLETS AND SMARTPHONES SHIFTS EMAIL AWAY FROM PCs; EMAIL VIA PC EXPECTED TO FALL BY 20 PERCENT; SMALL BUSINESS TELECOMMUTING DOUBLES
San Jose, CA, April 19, 2011: Techaisle's recent SMB Mobility Survey shows that over the next two years, SMBs accessing email via PCs is likely to drop by 20 percent while access via smartphones and tablets is likely to rise by about 13 percent in the same time period. While email remains the preferred communication mode, SMBs are increasingly taking advantage of applications such as Skype, web conferencing, and social networking to communicate with customers, partners and coworkers.
SMB Mobility Survey reveals that telecommuting and traveling for work has now become a norm with 72 percent of SMBs reporting that one or more of their employees works from home either occasionally or always. Out of these, 15 percent of SMB employees always work from home whereas another 11 percent work from home between 3-5 days a week.
More profoundly, it took a decade for telecommuting among US small businesses to double itself to 34 percent from 2000 to 2009. However, it has taken only two years to double itself again to 68 percent currently. Growth in adoption of smartphones and tablets, availability of social networking platforms and usage of cloud based applications along with remote managed services have contributed to this stupendous growth.
The survey shows that both smartphones and notebooks are showing similar patterns of usage by employees when traveling for work. 78 percent of the SMBs have one or more employees that travel for work driving adoption of all types of mobile devices from notebooks to tablets and smartphones. 70 percent of these SMBs use a notebook and 67 percent use smartphones as a device of choice for collaborating and communicating while traveling or telecommuting.
Similar to email usage, during the next two years, typical desk phone usage is likely to drop by 51 percent whereas phone conversations via smartphone are expected to rise by 30 percent.
Above results are part of Techaisle's Global SMB Mobility Adoption and Trends Reports covering adoption of Tablet PCs, Smartphones, Mobile Work Environment and Mobility Applications.
